In These Times, We Need the Arts More than Ever.
In the current crisis, theatre companies everywhere are being forced to cancel or postpone performances. The Michigan Shakespeare Festival has been no exception, at least in part. The pandemic has forced postponement of our March reading and upcoming performances by the Michigan High School Tour. Although unavoidable, we regret these actions were necessary.
However, that is not all the news.
Hope for the 2020 Summer Season Remains
Although nothing is certain at this point, the Board and Leadership of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival have committed to proceeding with preparing for the 2020 Mainstage summer season. Because performances of Henry V, The Merry Wives of Windsor and Brandon Thomas’ Charley’s Aunt do not open until July 9th, we have the ability to wait another 60 days before we have to make a “go/no go” decision. We will monitor the situation closely with the hope that things will be better by mid-May. Of course, we will proceed only if the public health risk from the pandemic has ended by that time. If things do not go as we hope, there will be contingency plans if the season is not possible.
In the meantime, casting is complete after seeing nearly 500 actors in auditions in Chicago, Detroit, Jackson, and Milwaukee. Our fabulous directors and designers are hard at work imagining and rendering the sets, sound, lighting, and costumes that we will need. If all goes well, we will be ready to begin rehearsals in early June. But to pull this off, we are going to need your help.
We are so grateful to our patrons, sponsors, grantors, and donors for the financial support you have given. We are going to continue to need that support in the weeks ahead. Here are four ways you can help:
Purchase tickets for the 2020 Mainstage Season. If the season is cancelled, you will have the option of rolling your tickets over to 2021, donating them to the Festival, or requesting a refund. (Tickets)
Become a Festival member. Starting at just $100 (just $8.33/month) there are memberships levels for every budget with valuable benefits. (Membership)
Buy a Flexpass for someone as a gift. They can choose the plays and the dates that suit them.
Make a tax-deductible donation to the MSF. (Donations)
Thank you for your support.
